US experts and officials attributed the Republicans' significant loss in the US midterm elections to the war against Iran and close relations with Israel, along with the war's repercussions on oil and fuel prices and the cost of living.
The midterm elections held on Tuesday resulted in Democrats seizing control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate from the Republicans, dealing a major political defeat to Trump's party.
Widespread criticism of the war
Joe Kent, former director of the US National Center for Countering Terrorism, considered the elections to be a "referendum on the war against Iran," and called on US President Donald Trump to end the war and focus on improving living conditions.
For his part, expert Trita Parsi, co-founder and executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, said Trump sided with the Israeli position and launched an illegal war on Iran, calling on the Trump administration to listen to the American people rather than Israel.
Internal warnings
In the same context, Republican congresswoman Nancy Mace criticized the war on Iran, considering the party's loss in the elections as a warning to the administration, and said: "We have not seen a change of regime in Iran, but we have seen a change of regime here."
American journalists also blamed the war for the Republicans' decline, pointing to rising fuel prices, inflation, and their repercussions on Americans.
Proposed measures to regain voters
For his part, US Vice President JD Vance linked his party's loss to the war on Iran and relations with Israel, saying: "The cause of our loss is the war."
Vance proposed four measures to regain voters who had drifted away from the Republican Party, which include: ending the war with Iran, focusing on the cost of living and inflation, adopting an "America First" policy, and reevaluating relations with Israel.
In a related development, CBS News reported that Trump is consulting with his advisors regarding the future of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, amid speculation that some military leaders could be held responsible for the electoral loss.
