US Republican Congressman Thomas Massie insisted on his intention to introduce a resolution for the impeachment of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for a vote as soon as the House of Representatives resumes its sessions, emphasizing that he will not back down from this step unless the minister himself resigns.
Massie clarified, in statements to CNN on Wednesday evening, that he would introduce the resolution as soon as the House returns from its recess, which had prevented a vote before the midterm elections. He had previously announced on September 16 his intention to introduce the bill after the lawmakers returned.
For his part, Massie commented on the Republicans' losses in the midterm elections, saying: "You cannot fail this badly in an election because of just one issue." He believed that this loss could have been avoided if the party had gotten rid of "extremists" supporting President Donald Trump.
According to initial unofficial results, the Democratic Party outperformed the Republican Party in the US Congressional midterm elections, winning majorities in both the House and the Senate. Lawmakers had begun their recess on September 16 to avoid voting on the resolution.
He noted that the House of Representatives will resume its sessions on November 9. Massie, a member representing Kentucky since 2012, is known for his critical stance towards Trump's policies, especially military interventions and government spending, and he opposed the war on Iran and aid to Israel.
