US Republican Senator Dan Sullivan announced on Tuesday that the similarity of his name with another candidate in the Alaska Senate elections caused confusion among voters, noting that he received calls from voters who expressed their confusion due to the presence of a candidate with the same name on the ballot.
In statements to the US "Fox News" network, Sullivan clarified that he received calls from voters who expressed their confusion, adding: "We are hearing from many people who feel confused. I have heard from people who think they voted for the wrong person and apologized to me. And as I said, the plan is working."
Accusations Against Democrats
He pointed out that the matter concerns the candidacy of retired teacher Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., whose name appears on the ballot alongside Republican Senator Dan Sullivan, who is seeking a third term.
The similarity of the names raised accusations from Republicans against Democrats of recruiting the retired candidate to divert voters' votes and weaken the chances of the Republican senator.
Judicial and Political Interventions
Sullivan's statements come after US President Donald Trump called for excluding the Democratic Senate candidate from Alaska, Mary Peltola, from the ballot and prosecuting her criminally, accusing Democrats of orchestrating a plan to mislead voters.
In a related development, the US Department of Justice filed a lawsuit seeking to prevent the state of Alaska from certifying the results of the Senate elections under certain conditions, if the current Republican senator loses his seat.
Ongoing Legal Dispute
The case comes amid escalating controversy regarding the integrity of the electoral race in Alaska, which is considered one of the important competitions in the US midterm congressional elections.
The accusations against Democrats regarding the orchestration of the candidacy of a person with the same name as the Republican senator have not been proven, and the case remains under dispute and judicial investigation.
