A US study has shown that the oxaloacetate dietary supplement may help improve certain cognitive functions and reduce fatigue in breast cancer survivors who suffer from memory and concentration difficulties after treatment.
The scientific website Medical Xpress reported the day before yesterday that the study, conducted by researchers at the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of California, Los Angeles, and published in the journal JCO Oncology Advances, showed that taking the supplement for eight weeks was associated with improved cognitive symptoms and reduced fatigue, along with improvements in some tests measuring executive functions and information processing speed.
Side Effects and Precautions
Cancer-related cognitive impairment is sometimes known as "brain fog" and may persist in some patients after treatment ends, affecting memory, attention, and the ability to perform daily activities. Researchers also observed improvements in physical performance and a decrease in fatigue levels, while the most common side effects included digestive disturbances such as bloating and nausea.
The researchers noted that the results remain preliminary due to the small size of the study, emphasizing the need for broader clinical trials to verify the efficacy and safety of the oxaloacetate supplement before recommending its widespread use to alleviate cognitive problems in breast cancer survivors.
Nature of the Disease
Breast cancer is a disease that occurs when some cells in the breast begin to grow and divide abnormally and out of control, forming a mass or tumor that may spread to other tissues or different parts of the body if left untreated.
