Preliminary Study Results
A recent study by researchers at Rockefeller University in the United States showed that losartan, a drug used to treat high blood pressure, may contribute to activating brown adipose tissue and enhancing the body's energy consumption, opening the door to studying its metabolic properties and potential for future therapeutic applications.
Health Mechanisms and Metabolism
A study published yesterday, Wednesday, in the scientific journal Nature, noted that researchers observed a potential effect of losartan on brown fat activity. Brown fat is a type of adipose tissue that helps the body consume energy and convert it into heat, unlike white fat, which plays a major role in energy storage. The results indicated that increased brown fat activity was associated with better health indicators, including blood sugar and lipid levels, cardiovascular health, and a reduction in some inflammation markers.
Link to Mental Health
Researchers also observed a correlation between the presence of brown fat and lower rates of anxiety and depression. However, these results do not prove a causal relationship, necessitating further research to determine the nature of the link between brown fat activity and mental health. The study showed that activating brown fat may increase the body's consumption of energy and oxygen, highlighting the importance of this tissue in regulating metabolism, i.e., the processes by which the body converts food into energy needed to perform vital functions.
Medical Warnings
Researchers pointed out that the potential effect of losartan on brown fat raises questions about the possibility of utilizing this mechanism independently of its known effect in lowering blood pressure, which may pave the way for studies to develop treatments targeting metabolic processes. These results open the door to further research to understand the role of brown fat in cardiovascular and metabolic health, and to explore drugs that can affect its activity. Researchers emphasized that the results are not sufficient to adopt losartan for other treatments, and doses should not be changed or prescribed blood pressure medication stopped without consulting a doctor.
