US study reveals secrets of unconscious dialect imitation
An Ohio study confirms that attention and prior expectations determine the vocal characteristics listeners mimic unconsciously.

Mechanisms of Attention and Expectations

A recent American study showed that imitating others' dialects does not always happen spontaneously, but is influenced by the extent of a person's attention to their pronunciation and their expectations regarding dialect sounds, which may lead them to mimic some of its characteristics without intending to do so.

The magazine "Phys.org," specializing in publishing scientific and technical news, reported on Saturday that the study conducted by researchers from Ohio State University in the United States confirmed that attention and prior expectations play a role in determining the vocal characteristics that the listener imitates.

Brain Processing of Sound

The researchers clarified that the brain not only receives sounds but also processes them based on its expectations regarding the way of speech, which may affect the sounds a person imitates or is not influenced by. A person may be influenced by a specific pronunciation when they notice it or see it as prominent compared to others.

The results indicated that some vocal characteristics, especially those that attract the listener's attention or carry social connotations, may be reflected in their way of speaking even without direct instruction to imitate the dialect, which may explain the differences among people in the extent to which they are influenced by the surrounding dialects.

Acquisition of Linguistic Features

Studying this phenomenon helps understand how features of new dialects are acquired through daily communication, especially when moving to different areas, as some people may acquire characteristics from the new environment's dialect, while others retain the features of their original dialects despite long contact with speakers from other regions.

Researchers believe that studying the mechanisms of attention and expectations in speech processing may help clarify the reasons behind the transfer of some vocal characteristics to a person's speech without their awareness, and distinguish between spontaneous imitation and deliberate mimicry.
