A report issued by the US Department of the Treasury revealed that the maritime blockade and stringent economic sanctions imposed by the United States on Iran, along with the closure of land trade routes, have led to a sharp decline in Iranian economic activity and increased pressure on the country's financial and commercial system.
The report, excerpts of which were published today by the US news website Axios on Saturday, stated that the Iranian Rial has lost about a quarter of its value since the start of the US campaign late last August, recording a record low in October of 2.687 million Rials against the US dollar in the unofficial market. Meanwhile, the annual inflation rate rose to about 90 percent last September, compared to about 35 percent at the beginning of 2025.
The report noted that Iran has not been able to load any oil shipments onto tankers since August 25 due to the maritime blockade and sanctions, pointing out that Tehran sold its remaining oil stranded at sea, according to data from Kpler, a company specializing in tracking maritime trade. It highlighted that attempts to circumvent the blockade via land routes face bottlenecks at the borders with Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Turkmenistan, with thousands of trucks stuck at the Turkish border and delays in crossing reaching up to 20 days.
According to the report, US restrictions extended to the aviation, banking, and digital transactions sectors, with regional countries banning flights by Iranian airlines, imposing additional restrictions on Iranian banks, and targeting cryptocurrency trading platforms accused by Washington of helping to circumvent sanctions. These developments come in the context of the "Day of Decisiveness" campaign announced by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on August 24, as part of what Washington describes as the "Economic Outcast Operation," aimed at intensifying economic pressure on Iran, alongside US efforts to restart negotiations regarding it, according to Axios.
