US voters continued casting their ballots on Tuesday in the midterm congressional elections, amid fierce competition between the Republican and Democratic parties for control of the House of Representatives and the Senate. These elections serve as a significant political test for the US administration and the competing parties, with widespread attention on their results and impact on domestic and foreign policy directions in the coming period.
Election Race Details
The elections cover all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, along with 35 seats in the Senate, as well as elections for governors in 36 states and various local positions and state-level referendums. The Associated Press reported that Democrats must win four Senate seats and three House seats to wrest control of both chambers from the Republicans.
Participation and Redistricting
More than 59 million Americans had already cast their votes early before polling centers opened earlier today, according to data from the University of Florida Election Lab. This year's House elections feature a notably different electoral map compared to 2024, following the redrawing of approximately one-third of electoral districts to varying degrees during the current cycle.
Key States and Poll Closures
The Senate elections feature notable contests in several states, including Maine, New Hampshire, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio, Iowa, Kansas, Texas, and Alaska. These states are the focal point of the battle for a Senate majority. Polls are scheduled to close sequentially later today according to local time in each state, after which vote counting and the announcement of official results in the various races will begin.
