US Vice President JD Vance warned President Donald Trump that the war with Iran faces widespread public rejection and could lead to Republican losses in the midterm elections. US media reports stated that Vance alerted to the limited popular support for the war, noting that most senior officials in the US administration share the same stance.
For his part, Trump responded to a question about whether the war against Iran was behind the Republicans' declining performance in the elections, saying: "Iran was also part of that." Vance linked the decline in Republican votes in the midterm elections to tensions with Iran and relations with Israel.
Sources indicated that Trump is more inclined to resume attacks on Iran, and that he studied launching an attack on it before the midterm elections, under pressure from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, before postponing the step until after the elections. The report clarified that the options currently open to Trump include resuming attacks on Iran, reaching an agreement with Tehran, or continuing to pressure it through naval blockades and economic sanctions.
According to initial unofficial results, the Democratic Party surpassed its Republican counterpart in the US Congress midterm elections, seizing majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. On February 28, 2026, the United States and Israel launched a war on Iran, which resulted in thousands of deaths, and Tehran responded with attacks on Israel and what it said were US sites in the region.
Last June, Washington and Tehran reached a memorandum of understanding regarding a ceasefire, before its implementation stalled and attacks resumed. Current disagreements between the two sides revolve around the conditions for ending the war and navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, which constitutes a strategic passage for global energy supplies.
