Fierce competition for the title
Dutch driver Max Verstappen, of Red Bull, seeks to delay the crowning of Italian Kimi Antonelli as champion by securing his third consecutive victory, aiming for a new win at the Formula 1 US Grand Prix. The four-time world champion Verstappen won in Bahrain, hosted in Malaysia, and Singapore, confirming himself as a strong contender for further success, while Antonelli, the promising 20-year-old Mercedes driver, is close to clinching the title at the 18th round of the Formula 1 World Championship.
Verstappen's achievements in Austin
Verstappen, 29, who acknowledged the exceptional talent of Antonelli, took first place at the Circuit of the Americas last year after starting from pole position. The Dutch driver aims next Sunday to secure his fifth victory on the track in Texas after 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2025, as British driver Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion now with Ferrari, has previously won five times.
Verstappen's reservations
Verstappen appeared cautious regarding his chances, refusing to consider Red Bull's recent development in performance and results as a guarantee of further victories. After his win in Singapore, he said: "It is difficult to say that. I do not want to confirm now that I will compete for the win in Austin, but the last weekends were great. I deal with each race individually, and we will see how things go there. It is a completely different track."
Title-clinching scenarios
After a strong streak that saw him reach the podium seven times in the last eight races, including two wins and second places in Hungary, Spain, and Azerbaijan, Verstappen, who trails by 119 points in fourth place in the drivers' standings, appears capable of complicating Antonelli's (340 points) task of clinching the title this week. Antonelli hopes to become the first Italian driver to win the Formula 1 World Championship since 1953, as well as the youngest champion in the history of Formula 1. However, Verstappen could delay these celebrations if he continues his momentum and secures a new victory in Austin.
To clinch the title in Texas, Antonelli, who leads the standings by 102 points over his teammate, British driver George Russell, needs to win the race, while Russell must fail to finish in the top nine, and Hamilton must not finish in the top four.
