Former Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic admitted his defeat in the early parliamentary elections, speaking about external support that contributed to this result. Vucic, who resigned from the presidency to run for prime minister, stated that the Students' List won the vote, affirming that he will continue political work from the ranks of the opposition.
In the same context, the Center for Free and Democratic Elections in Serbia (CISD) announced on Sunday, based on unofficial results and after counting 56 percent of votes, that the Students' List obtained 52 percent, compared to 39 percent for Vucic's list. The state election commission reported that voter turnout reached 67.6 percent by 7:00 PM on Sunday, compared to 58 percent in the 2023 elections.
Meanwhile, the elections took place amid student protests lasting nearly two years, which erupted following the collapse of a concrete canopy at a train station in the city of Novi Sad on November 1, 2024, killing 16 people. The student movement participated in the elections under the slogan "Students' List - Students Win" and declared victory in the vote.
He noted that some polling stations witnessed acts of violence, while the Ministry of Interior stated that two police officers were injured in the Lazarevac area, amid allegations of electoral violations in several centers. Armored police vehicles also spread through the streets of the capital, Belgrade, before the closing of polling stations, amidst tightened security measures.
Vucic assumed the office of prime minister in 2014, before being elected president of the country in 2017 and 2022, remaining in power for 12 years until his resignation to run in the current elections.
