The collapse of a water culvert caused by flash floods resulting from heavy rains near Sheikh Hassan village in northern Raqqa countryside has created a gap in the international road between Raqqa and Tel Abyad, cutting off traffic, while relevant authorities have begun emergency works to ensure vehicle passage.
Sheikh Hassan municipal center head, Abdulrazzaq Al-Shoq, clarified that the municipality received the report early Saturday morning and immediately coordinated with the Ain Issa city council and the Directorate of Technical Services to address the damages, given the importance of the road linking Raqqa to Suluq and Tel Abyad, extending towards Qamishli and Al-Hasakah.
For his part, Khalil Muhammad, an engineer at the Tel Abyad Technical Services Center, stated that workshops began filling the collapse site and working on creating a temporary alternative route until the culvert is repaired and rebuilt.
Abdullah Al-Saleh, a preparedness and readiness specialist at the Directorate of Emergency and Disaster Management in Raqqa Governorate, confirmed that teams rushed to the site upon receiving the report from the early warning system at the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management, revealing a large gap caused by soil collapse.
Al-Saleh noted that work is ongoing to create a temporary side passage in cooperation with Technical Services, urging drivers to reduce speed and stay away from road edges and damaged sites to ensure their safety.
Meanwhile, Hassan Al-Ali, a resident of Kalata village, explained that the culvert is located between the villages of Al-Wasita and Sheikh Hassan, about 200 meters south of the Sheikh Hassan junction, and warned of the possibility of renewed damage with continued rain, emphasizing the importance of building a regular culvert to handle water flow and provide a traffic detour during construction.
Raqqa Governorate experienced a severe rainstorm over the past two days, causing flash floods and inundations that damaged several areas. Emergency and rescue teams responded to incoming reports and carried out rescue and evacuation operations for several people trapped by floodwaters, including women and children.
