English club West Ham appointed Scott Parker as head coach of the first team, succeeding the dismissed Portuguese manager Nuno Espirito Santo, the club announced on Wednesday, as they compete in the Championship and seek promotion to the Premier League.
Parker said after signing a two-and-a-half-year contract with West Ham in a statement released by the English club: "It is a great moment of pride for me to take on this role and return to a club that means a lot to me and my family." The English manager added: "I have very beautiful memories of my time here. It was four years that saw perhaps the best football of my career. There was warmth, love, and a feeling I probably did not find anywhere else. This is an opportunity that excites me greatly."
Parker believes in his ability to revive West Ham's promotion ambitions, continuing: "I feel proud and honored to be the person who will lead the way back to the English Premier League. I have competed in this league three times and succeeded in promotion on all three occasions. It is a difficult league, and that cannot be denied at all, and I will use every bit of my experience and knowledge to achieve this goal."
Parker, a former England midfield player, spent four seasons as a player for West Ham. As a manager, he also successfully led Fulham, Bournemouth, and Burnley to promotion from the Championship to the top flight. The 46-year-old Parker had also previously managed Belgian club Club Brugge.
West Ham dismissed 52-year-old Nuno Santo from his position on Tuesday. He had been in charge of the team last season when they were relegated from the English Premier League. West Ham was considered by many as the strongest candidate for direct promotion to the top-tier Premier League, but they currently sit in eighth place, six points behind leaders Middlesbrough.
Parker has become the fourth permanent manager to take charge of West Ham since the departure of Scot David Moyes in May 2024.
