The Syrian government has officially announced the 2026 version of the new Syrian currency; this is considered the most notable financial move in years.
The purpose of this step is to reorganize the monetary system, facilitate daily transactions, and restore confidence in the Syrian pound after a prolonged period of economic deterioration.
The issuance of the new Syrian pound marks the beginning of a different financial era, based entirely on new designs, natural and economic symbols, and free from delicate political or geographical images, following the removal of two zeros from the old currency.

Syrian President Ahmad Al-Shara receives the new currency from the Governor of the Central Bank of Syria, Abdul Qader Al-Hasriya - December 29, 2025
The design of the new Syrian currency
Al-Hasriya explained that the new currency will be issued in six different denominations to meet the requirements of daily transactions more efficiently, including small, medium, and large denominations to facilitate cash handling in the markets.
He indicated that the design would be free of images and symbols, enhancing clarity and ease of verification, in line with the global trend toward clean and simple designs.
He confirmed that the new currency would not be just numbers, but would carry a contemporary national identity reflecting modernity and economic stability, expecting that its launch would help alleviate the liquidity shortage problem.

Money Supply and Inflation
Al-Exclusivity confirmed that confidence in the central bank is one of the most important reasons for addressing the liquidity crisis, noting that the bank deals with major international companies in currency printing to prevent counterfeiting, and that it will work to provide the Syrian pound if demand for it increases against foreign currency.

What is the fate of the current currency after the replacement decision?
The replacement decree stipulated that the process is limited to Syrian territories only, and that the new currency carries security features that prevent counterfeiting. It was emphasized that the bank is working on developing electronic payment as part of its strategy, and it has begun providing banks with temporary solutions to address this issue, pointing out that the bank deals directly with large financial institutions and does not work with intermediaries.
The bank clarified, in a statement reported by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), that all denominations of the Syrian currency are still legally valid for circulation until official instructions indicating otherwise are issued, which will be announced through a decree published via approved media channels.

The Central Bank of Syria emphasized the importance of the cooperation of all concerned parties to avoid any disruption in financial transactions in the upcoming period, affirming that it will apply legal measures against non-compliant institutions, in accordance with the provisions of the Basic Currency Law and the Central Bank of Syria Law.
