Yemen calls on UN Security Council to condemn Houthi attacks on Aden
Yemen urges Security Council to condemn Houthi attacks on Aden and lift siege on Taiz.

Yemen has called on the UN Security Council to condemn the recent missile attacks by the Houthi militia on Aden and hold them accountable, and to take practical measures to counter their military escalation and prevent recurrence. The Yemeni News Agency (Saba) reported that this was stated in a letter addressed by Yemen’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Abdullah al-Saadi, to the President of the Security Council, with a copy sent to the UN Secretary-General, regarding the attacks carried out by the militia on the 24th and 26th of the current month in the temporary capital Aden and its surroundings.

The Yemeni government stressed that the continuation of these attacks reflects the seriousness of the militia’s military escalation and the ongoing threats they pose to the lives of civilians and internally displaced persons, as well as to the integrity of state institutions and vital service facilities. It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting civilians and civilian objects, and to fulfilling its obligations under international humanitarian law and international human rights law.

For its part, the Yemeni government stated in a statement today that lifting the Houthi militia’s siege on Taiz governorate, protecting its residents, and securing its roads and supplies are among its top national responsibilities. At a conference held in Aden to review the impacts of the militia’s war and siege on the governorate, it said that the war and siege Taiz is enduring constitute a continuous violation of citizens’ rights and of state sovereignty and its institutions.

The government emphasized that subjecting citizens to starvation and bombardment does not grant militias any right to rule them, and that it awaits a practical stance from its international partners to support it in fulfilling this responsibility. The UN Security Council had issued a presidential statement on the 16th of the current month condemning the Houthi militia’s escalation and its attacks on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and navigation in the Red Sea.
