Yemen Urges UN to Lift Siege on Taiz
Yemeni government warns of humanitarian catastrophe threatening 4 million and calls for urgent measures to lift the siege on Taiz.

The Yemeni government has called on the United Nations and the UN Security Council to take urgent and effective steps to end the siege imposed on the city of Taiz, and to open roads and crossings for civilians and humanitarian supplies. The government has warned of worsening humanitarian conditions in the governorate due to the escalation by the Houthi militia, emphasizing the necessity of direct international intervention.

According to the Saba news agency, Yemeni Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Afrah al-Zoubi sent a letter today, Wednesday, to the UN Secretary-General, the President of the UN Security Council, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs. The letter alerted that tightening the siege on Taiz and its countryside portends a humanitarian catastrophe threatening more than four million people, including besieged residents and displaced persons.

In the same context, the Yemeni Foreign Ministry called for direct international pressure to immediately lift the siege and open all crossings in Taiz for the movement of civilians and supply chains. It also called for ensuring the sustainable and unimpeded delivery of food, fuel, and drinking water, alongside strengthening monitoring, documentation, and accountability mechanisms to ensure those responsible for violations are held accountable.

For its part, the Yemeni government renewed its commitment to cooperate with the United Nations, its specialized agencies, humanitarian and human rights organizations, and regional and international partners. It affirmed its readiness to provide available data and information and facilitate humanitarian response efforts, contributing to alleviating the suffering of the population, protecting civilians, and ensuring aid reaches its rightful recipients.

The governorate of Taiz is witnessing military escalation and deterioration in humanitarian conditions, amid warnings of the repercussions of restrictions imposed on main roads and the movement of civilians, commercial goods, and humanitarian aid. Yemen had previously called on the UN and the UN Security Council last Saturday to condemn the attack launched by the Houthi militia on Aden International Airport and to hold those responsible accountable.
