Yemen Welcomes Pope's Call to Lift Siege on Taiz
Yemen's Foreign Ministry urges the international community to act to end the Houthi siege on Taiz and protect civilians from humanitarian suffering.

The Yemeni government welcomed Pope Leo XIV's call regarding the humanitarian situation in Yemen, particularly in the city of Taiz, calling on the international community to take action to end the siege imposed by the Houthi militia on the city and to protect civilians.

The Yemeni Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement published via the X platform on Sunday, expressed its appreciation for the Pope's concern for the suffering of Yemenis and his call to cease hostilities, emphasizing the importance of the appeal in mobilizing international solidarity and enhancing responsibility towards those affected.

For its part, the Ministry pointed out that the continuation of the siege, along with shelling of residential areas and restrictions on the movement of citizens and supplies, exacerbates the suffering of the population, calling for its lifting, opening of roads, cessation of attacks on civilians, and ensuring the unimpeded delivery of food, water, medicine, and humanitarian aid.

The Ministry added that it has called on the international community to take practical measures to pressure the Houthi militia to end the siege and stop violations, protect the population and civilian facilities, document violations, and hold perpetrators accountable, emphasizing that providing basic needs to civilians is an obligation imposed by international humanitarian law.

The Ministry reaffirmed the Yemeni government's commitment to facilitating humanitarian work and coordinating with the United Nations and relief organizations to ensure aid reaches its rightful recipients in various governorates, while the Taiz Governorate Siege Affairs Office announced yesterday that 237 civilians were killed and injured due to Houthi militia attacks between August 1 and October 22.
