The Yemeni Army announced on Sunday the death of 100 members of the Houthi group and the injury of 190 others during clashes and airstrikes that took place in Taiz governorate in the southwest of the country on Saturday, coinciding with the thwarting of a wide Houthi attack west of Taiz city. This came in a statement issued by the Taiz Military Axis affiliated with the Yemeni Army, published via the American platform "X".
Details of Losses and Clashes
The statement said that Houthi losses due to clashes and airstrikes during Saturday's hours amounted to 100 killed and 190 wounded, in addition to the destruction of military equipment belonging to the group. It added that army forces, supported by popular resistance, managed on Saturday evening to repel a wide Houthi attack west of Taiz city, following violent clashes involving various types of weapons and lasting for hours.
It clarified that clashes concentrated on the fronts of the old airport and Madarat west of the city, while fronts of Al-Aqroud, Al-Masrak, and Al-Shaqb in southern Taiz witnessed violent clashes resulting in human and material losses among the Houthis. It pointed to sporadic clashes breaking out on the northern front of the city.
Airstrikes and Military Operations
In this context, the army stated that its warplanes carried out 16 airstrikes targeting Houthi sites and gatherings around Jabal Han west of Taiz, fronts of Al-Aqroud, Al-Masrak, and Al-Shaqb to the south, as well as Al-Khamseen Street and Tubat Al-Dunain northwest of the city. Independent verification of the casualty figures announced by the army was not possible, and the Houthi group did not immediately comment on the statement.
On Saturday, the Yemeni Army announced control over new military positions on the eastern front and the thwarting of continuous Houthi attacks in Taiz governorate, as part of the "Yemen Dawn" military operation. At that time, the army said in a statement published by the official spokesperson for the Yemeni Armed Forces, Majid Al-Nazili, that its forces carried out 1,417 targeting operations within 24 hours using warplanes, drones, artillery, and rocket launchers.
Context of Military Escalation
These developments fall within a military escalation that began in July 2026, considered the widest since the relative calm Yemen witnessed following a truce that began in April 2022. Since October 5, the "Yemen Dawn" military operation has been ongoing, which Rashad Al-Alimi, chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, said aims to restore state institutions from the Houthis and control the capital, Sanaa.
Yemen has been witnessing a war since the Houthis took control of the capital Sanaa and several governorates in September 2014, before the intervention of an Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia in March 2015, in support of the internationally recognized Yemeni government.
