The Yemeni Army on Saturday demanded the Houthi group reveal the fate of Colonel Taha Awn, commander of the 7th Battalion, amid reports indicating his death in one of their prisons. This came in a statement issued by the 35th Armored Brigade of the Yemeni Army, which was reviewed by an Anadolu Agency correspondent, emphasizing holding the militia fully responsible for the commander's life amid reports of his elimination.
Kidnapping Details
The statement stated that the Houthi militia kidnapped Colonel Taha Awn while he was receiving treatment at Khalifa Hospital in Al-Turabah city, south of Taiz Governorate, following his injury in clashes with them. The statement considered the kidnapping of a wounded person from within a medical facility, followed by the circulation of reports of his elimination in the military hospital in Sana'a, a highly serious crime requiring immediate accountability.
Demands for Disclosure
The Yemeni Army demanded the immediate disclosure of Awn's fate, clarifying his health status and place of detention, holding the Houthi group responsible for any harm done or that may be done to him. No immediate comment was issued by the Houthi group regarding what the 35th Armored Brigade of the Yemeni Army mentioned, amid a military escalation that began last July.
Context of the Conflict
This development comes within a military escalation considered the widest since the relative calm Yemen witnessed following a truce that began in April 2022. Earlier, Al-Jumhuria TV channel, affiliated with Tariq Saleh, quoted close sources confirming that Awn was eliminated. Yemen has been witnessing a war since the Houthis seized the capital Sana'a and several governorates in September 2014, before the intervention of an Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia in March 2015.
