The Yemeni Army announced on Friday that it is engaged in fierce battles with the Houthis in the Taiz governorate in the southwest of the country, while the European Union strongly condemned the group's attack on the Maashiq Presidential Palace in the interim capital, Aden.
The media center of the Al-Aghrad Front, affiliated with the government forces, stated in a brief statement that army and popular resistance forces "are engaged in fierce battles in Dhahih Mountain, south of Taiz, with Houthi militias since the early hours of the morning," without providing further details. Dhahih Mountain is considered one of the important strategic sites in the Al-Masrakah directorate, south of Taiz, as it overlooks several areas within the directorate.
For his part, the European Union ambassador to Yemen, Patrick Simonet, condemned the Houthi attack on the Maashiq Palace in Aden on Friday. Simonet said in a statement that "the European Union strongly condemns the Houthi attack on the Maashiq Palace in Aden, where the Yemeni Prime Minister and members of his government were holding a meeting." He added: "The European Union will continue to support the Yemeni government during this critical stage."
The Yemeni government had announced on Thursday that five people were killed and 16 others injured in an attack launched by the Houthi group using several ballistic missiles on the Maashiq Presidential Palace in Aden. A government source, speaking to Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity, said the Houthis targeted the palace with five ballistic missiles, while several government members were inside at the time of the attack. This is the first such targeting of the Maashiq Palace since the resumption of clashes between the Houthis and the internationally recognized Yemeni government last July.
Yemen has been witnessing a war since the Houthis seized control of the capital, Sanaa, and several governorates in September 2014, before an Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia intervened in March 2015 in support of the Yemeni government.
