Yemeni Organization Warns of Humanitarian Disaster in Taiz Due to Houthi Siege
A Yemeni organization warns of a humanitarian disaster in Taiz due to the Houthi siege affecting 2.5 million people.

The Yemeni organization "Rasad" for Rights and Freedoms warned that the city of Taiz is on the brink of an impending disaster, following the prevention of essential supplies from entering, the closure of roads and crossings, and the continued siege imposed on it by the Houthi militia. The Yemeni News Agency reported that the organization stated in a statement on the occasion of World Food Day, which falls on Friday, that Yemen has reached the fourth stage of severe humanitarian conditions.

For its part, the organization pointed out that the Houthi militia is imposing a suffocating siege on more than 2.5 million people in the city of Taiz, including 140,000 displaced persons, calling for pressure to be exerted on the militia to open roads and allow the arrival of basic, medical, and water aid. It confirmed that the city has entered the fifth and final stage, which is the most severe, after local authorities issued an appeal to provide basic food for citizens.

The organization added the necessity of urgent intervention to save the city's inhabitants from an imminent disaster amid the absence of the most basic living conditions and the halt of fuel derivatives and water supplies, as well as the continuation of random shelling on civilians in the city. It clarified that these operations have intensified in recent days, causing dozens of casualties, including women and children.

Rasad organization explained that Yemen has faced a worsening food security crisis since 2014, linked to the ongoing conflict, economic deterioration, displacement, decline in income sources, rising food prices, damage to agricultural production, and reduced humanitarian funding. It called on the international community, donors, and humanitarian organizations to increase humanitarian funding, strengthen food and nutrition security programs, and support livelihoods.

It pointed out the necessity of addressing the economic and humanitarian causes of the conflict, ensuring Yemenis' right to access sufficient and safe food. It also called on the United Nations and its agencies to bear their moral and legal responsibility to protect civilians and ensure the delivery of their basic needs for food and medicine, amid the recent escalation by the Houthi militia.
