YouTube is preparing to allow static images and animated GIFs in video comments starting next November, a move aimed at expanding interaction options between users and content creators, after years of comments being largely limited to text and emojis.
The technology news site Notebookcheck reported on Sunday that Google, the owner of YouTube, updated its API changelog, adding a new field that allows inserting image links within comments, indicating the anticipated expansion of this feature.
It clarified that GIFs will be available through a dedicated library within the YouTube mobile app, with the feature rollout gradually reaching all users, not just subscribers to the YouTube Premium service.
It noted that the platform is simultaneously working on developing interaction and comment management tools, including allowing voice comments for users via TVs, providing additional options for content creators to organize discussions, alongside new features for communities and channel members.
YouTube had previously announced plans to add GIFs to comments during the 'Made on YouTube' event, with the feature appearing for some users before its general release.
These updates come as part of the platform's efforts to develop communication and interaction tools and keep pace with features offered by other social media platforms, with some characteristics still being tested before widespread availability.
