YouTube adopts AV2 technology to enhance video quality in 2027
YouTube launches AV2 via web in early 2027 to improve streaming quality and efficiency by 30% compared to AV1.

YouTube plans to adopt the new video coding technology "AV2" via the web player in early 2027, a move aimed at improving streaming efficiency and providing better image quality with lower data consumption, thereby enhancing the viewing experience, especially for those with limited internet connections.

The tech website "Digital Trends" reported on Sunday that the new technology offers approximately 30 percent higher compression efficiency compared to the currently used "AV1" technology. This allows video to be transmitted at similar quality using less data, or to deliver better image quality when using the same data rate, without necessarily reducing consumption by that percentage in all cases.

Development by the Tech Alliance

The "AOMedia" Open Media Alliance developed the "AV2" technology. The alliance includes several tech companies, such as Google, Apple, Amazon, Intel, and Netflix. The technology supports improved streaming of high dynamic range "HDR" video and enables new capabilities for displaying multiple clips or different camera angles simultaneously.

Compatibility and Device Challenges

The website clarified that the technology's launch will begin via the web version, without specifying a date for its availability on mobile apps and smart TVs. Its spread depends on the compatibility of browsers and devices with it. Some current devices may face difficulties running "AV2" clips efficiently due to lack of support for decoding via dedicated units, which could increase the load on the processor when relying on software decoding.

The adoption of the new technology is expected to improve video streaming quality and efficiency, while offering more advanced viewing options. The actual benefits for users will become clear with the start of implementation and the expansion of support for compatible devices and browsers.
