The YouTube platform intends to adopt the new video encoding technology 'AV2' via the web player at the beginning of 2027, a step aimed at improving streaming efficiency and providing better image quality with lower data consumption, thereby enhancing the viewing experience, especially for those with limited internet connections.
Advanced compression efficiency
The technology website 'Digital Trends' stated on Sunday that the new technology offers compression efficiency about 30% higher than the currently used 'AV1' technology, allowing video to be transmitted at similar quality using less data, or providing better image quality when using the same data rate, without this meaning a reduction in consumption by that percentage in all cases.
AOMedia alliance development
The Alliance for Open Media 'AOMedia' developed the 'AV2' technology, and the alliance includes several technology companies, including 'Google', 'Apple', 'Amazon', 'Intel', and 'Netflix'. The technology supports improving high dynamic range 'HDR' video streaming, and also enables new possibilities for displaying multiple clips or different camera angles simultaneously.
Compatibility challenges
The website clarified that the launch of the technology will begin via the web version, without specifying a date for its availability in mobile applications and smart TVs, as its spread depends on the compatibility of browsers and devices with it. Some current devices may face difficulties playing 'AV2' clips efficiently, due to lack of support for decoding via dedicated processors, which may increase the burden on the processor when relying on software decoding.
The adoption of the new technology is expected to improve video streaming quality and efficiency, while providing more advanced viewing options, with the actual benefits for users becoming clear as implementation begins and support for compatible devices and browsers expands.
