YouTube Music Reveals AI-Generated Songs
New labels on the platform reveal generative AI use in music production to enhance transparency.

YouTube Music announced the launch of new explanatory labels that reveal the use of generative artificial intelligence in song production, aiming to enhance transparency and provide listeners with clearer information about the role of these technologies in music content creation.

The tech website TechCrunch reported on Wednesday that the labels will appear on song playlists on the platform, with plans to also implement them on the main YouTube platform, allowing users to access additional information about how the musical work was produced. The platform relies on information provided by its music industry partners, along with its own detection tools, to determine which songs are subject to the labels, enabling users to click on the label to learn more about the role of AI in the song's production.

The system includes three categories indicating whether the work was produced entirely using generative AI, combines auto-generated elements with human contributions, or does not use these technologies. The category for works free of generative AI does not necessarily include all forms of digital audio processing, as tools like Auto-Tune for pitch correction are not in themselves generative technologies.

The new labels aim to help listeners distinguish between different music production styles and provide additional information about the content source, without implying that the sole use of AI excludes the song from generating financial returns on the platform. This step comes amid the growing expansion of music production using AI and the increasing debate over artists' rights and content transparency, with YouTube's policy focusing on disclosing the use of these technologies rather than broadly banning AI-produced works.
