Zelensky warns against dividing Ukraine in potential trilateral meeting
Ukrainian president warns US-Russia-China meeting could become a 'new Yalta' and questions Kyiv's participation in future talks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his country's position on Wednesday regarding a potential trilateral meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Russian and Chinese counterparts, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, emphasizing the importance of Ukraine's participation in any talks addressing its future.

Agence France-Presse quoted Zelensky as saying it remains unclear what the three countries might discuss, expressing hope that the meeting would not turn into what he described as "Yalta 2, 3, or 4," referencing the possibility of redistributing spheres of influence among major powers.

Anticipated talks in Abu Dhabi to revive peace track

Moscow had announced that preparations are underway to hold the trilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum summit, scheduled for mid-November, while Trump expressed his support for holding it.

Zelensky wrote in a post on his Telegram channel today: "The United States may discuss various issues with the Russians due to its concerns regarding global security."

He viewed Russia as the party most eager to hold the meeting, calling for not granting it "a new major diplomatic gain."

This comes as efforts continue to resume negotiations regarding the Russian-Ukrainian war, with expectations of a meeting between representatives of Russia, Ukraine, and the United States in the UAE during November to revive the peace track that halted earlier this year.

Zelensky said Kyiv wishes to hold an Abu Dhabi meeting before the anticipated meeting on the sidelines of the "APEC" summit, clarifying that his country seeks to reach a ceasefire in the Black Sea to secure grain exports, along with a ceasefire covering the energy sector before winter arrives.

Zelensky criticizes slow delivery of air defense missiles

In a related context, Zelensky expressed his frustration over the slow delivery of US "Patriot" interceptor missiles to his country, noting that, according to his estimates, Ukraine will receive an average of 12 missiles per month during 2026, with a significant shortage also in "NASAMS" interceptor missiles.

Zelensky had accused Washington last week of deliberately delaying deliveries, amid existing tensions with Trump.

It is worth noting that the term "Yalta" refers to the conference held in the Crimean Peninsula in February 1945, which brought together the leaders of the United States, the Soviet Union, and the United Kingdom: Franklin Roosevelt, Joseph Stalin, and Winston Churchill, to discuss post-World War II arrangements.

The conference formed a key milestone in shaping the contours of the international order after the war, including security and political arrangements in Europe, and later became a symbol of understandings reached by major powers regarding international issues and their potential impact on other countries.
