Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Russian forces launched one of their largest attacks on Ukraine's energy sector, targeting more than 15 vital energy generation and transmission facilities in various regions of the country.
Zelensky clarified in a statement published today on Saturday on the "X" platform that the attack, carried out over the past hours, saw the use of hundreds of drones and cruise and ballistic missiles, noting that Moscow seeks through this escalation to drain Ukrainian resources and weaken repair teams.
Direct Damages
Zelensky pointed out that the attacks caused significant damage despite air defenses shooting down a large number of targets, explaining that the most affected areas include Lutsk, Rivne, Zhytomyr, Vinnytsia, Shepetivka, Slavuta, and Netishyn, in addition to damage to facilities in Kharkiv, Kyiv, and Dnipro.
Warnings of Winter
The Ukrainian president warned that Russia seeks to plunge the country into darkness and deprive millions of people of electricity and heating as winter approaches.
International Reactions
In this context, Zelensky expressed his gratitude to European partners for providing new support packages, and criticized an American decision to suspend the implementation of sanctions and restrictions targeting Russian oil revenues, considering that easing pressure on Moscow encourages it to continue the war, calling for continued international pressure to end the conflict and prevent Russian President Vladimir Putin from prolonging it.
US President Donald Trump had signed an executive order earlier today suspending the implementation of sanctions, restrictions, and tariffs targeting Russian oil revenues, after signing a law last month granting him powers to impose these measures on Russian oil and gas buyers.
